Adani Group has denied reports of cancellation of Adani Green Energy’s wind power project in Sri Lanka. The group on Friday said the rates for the project are being re-evaluated as per standard procedure. AFP, citing sources in Sri Lanka’s Energy Ministry, had reported that the island country has canceled the power purchase agreement with Adani Group due to corruption allegations.
However, an Adani Group official has termed these reports as baseless. In a statement sent to the media on Friday, the official said, ‘There were reports that Adani’s 484 MW wind power projects in Mannar and Pune have been cancelled. These news are false and baseless.
“We are clearly saying that the project has not been cancelled,” the statement said. ‘The decision of the Sri Lankan Cabinet on January 2 to re-evaluate the approved tariffs in May 2024 is part of a standard review process (especially with a new government),’ he said.
“Adani Group remains committed to investing $1 billion in Sri Lanka’s green energy sector, promoting renewable energy and economic growth,” the group’s statement said. Adani Group is also building a container terminal in Colombo in partnership with John Keells and Sri Lanka Ports Authority.
This is not the first time this project has come into limelight. In 2022, a political controversy arose in Sri Lanka when wind power projects were awarded to Adani Green Energy without any tender process. A year later, in September 2023, the Sri Lankan Ministry of Power and Energy approved the Cabinet decision to classify the wind power projects awarded to Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) as ‘government-to-government’ deals between Sri Lanka and India. level memorandum was presented.
