Half our companies will be listed in 5 years

Michael Mo, the founder partner and Chief Affairs Officer of GSV Ventures, hopes that the firm’s portfolio companies in India will be listed in the stock market in the next five years. GSV Ventures has invested in Indian Edtech companies such as physics, emeritus, admitcard, apna, brightchamps. In a conversation with Udisha Srivastava, he expressed his views on the Edtech region of India. Main Excerpts:

In India, Edtech has to bear the brunt of high evaluation. How are you seeing trends to raise money in 2025?

The Edtech region was moving very fast in the years 2021 and the year 2022 across India and the world. There was a lot of investment, often on extremely high evaluation, then the market improved. Now things have been organized and we have high expectations about India. We are constantly watching important opportunities and are expecting more active in the market later.
We have invested millions of dollars. Investment in the year 2025 will be mainly due to opportunity. We have moved forward and would like to invest in businesses which are doing well and moving fast. There are some companies in India which we have an eye.

GSV Ventures wants to complete two deals in the year 2025, any update on it?

We have not made any official announcement so far. But we are associated with activism. You can expect some announcements from us in a short time and in the coming year.

How do you see the journey of Physics and IPO’s decision?

Physicswala has become an extraordinary successful business in a very short time. His achievements are really impressive. But I believe that the best is yet to come. They have reached the level from which their future will increase significantly. The success of Physicswala originally is due to helping students to be affordable and largely successful.

How many Indian companies of your portfolio are going to bring IPOs and how do you watch the achievement of IPO?

Most companies investing in venture are not listed in the stock market. About 90 to 95 percent of companies are either acquired or closed. But I hope that a large part of our portfolio companies is going to be listed in the stock market. It is a simple matter that they can do this and because it is the best way to maximize their ability. In the next five years, I would like at least 50 percent of our investment companies listed in the market. If you truly get such a business that can grow at the rate of 20 to 30 percent for a long time, then investing in it can be a big opportunity.
